Bideford will be seeking to regain the upper hand against St Austell tomorrow when they meet again at the highest level yet.
A friendly Devon-Cornwall rivalry has developed in recent seasons with the two sides following each other up from the Tribute Cornwall/Devon division to South West One West.
Bideford went up as Cornwall/Devon champions, with St Austell in second place, in 2011. The roles were reversed last season when St Austell won the Western Counties West title and runners-up Bideford had to win a play-off at Wells to take their place in South West One.
St Austell won both meetings last term after Bideford had won four of the previous six encounters.
After the clash at King George’s Field in March, St Austell left with a 21-15 win, a three-point lead in the table – and a framed cartoon from the clubhouse, which they took as a trophy.
The result might have been different had Pat Sanders not missed all five of his kicks at goal – worth 12 points. The Bideford man later redeemed himself with a man-of-the-match display in the play-off.
Bideford’s first match in South West One ended in a 37-5 defeat at Bridgwater and Albion on Saturday. St Austell started with a 31-22 defeat at North Petherton.
