Bideford Blues’ junior 16 quad have claimed their first victory of the season in the fifth round of the West of England Amateur Rowing Association Championship.
Shelby May, Charlotte Berry, Kirsty Snow and Abbie Lawson earned a win over their previously unbeaten home-town rivals Bideford Reds at the Paignton Regatta.
The Reds still hold a six-point lead over the Blues in the Championship.
Keeping the Blues in winning ways were the mixed senior B four of Hannah Myers, Alice Jackson, Milo George and Owen Winter who dominated their race to finish clear of a strong Dartmouth crew.
The mixed junior 18 quad – Zoe Robertson, Charlie White, Declan Monaghan and Kirsty Snow – came home ahead of Paignton to win in choppy conditions.
The novice quad of Tina Robertson, Annie Cook, Hannah and Jessica Myers picked up silver in a three-boat final against Dart-Totnes and Bideford Reds.
There were second places for the men’s and mixed novice double sculls.
It was the junior section who delivered the top performances for the Reds.
Their junior 16 crew of Dan Crowther, Nick Dualibi-Wilson, Matt Harris and Eden Brittle got their first win of the season and Crowther and Dualibi-Wilson linked up to take the double sculls race.
Also securing impressive wins were junior 14 girls Georgia O’Connor and Kayla Johnson who won their double sculls race and joined Olivia Pearce and Freya Vincent, plus cox Keely Mills, to win the fours and extend their lead in the Championship.
The Reds’ mixed novice four combination of Jon Lamont, Adam Curtis, Libby Willis and Jess Cox won the fun event.
Rowing in Torbay’s open water, the crews had to adapt from previous river-based regattas.
They will be in the Torridge estuary for the next round at the Appledore and Instow Regatta on Sunday.
