BATS are a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and The Conservation Regulations 2007.
Bats are also listed on Annex IV of the EC Habitats and Species Directive, which ensures protection to individual bats and their breeding sites and resting places.
This makes it illegal to kill, injure or disturb one.
Bat colonies have declined by as much as 90 per cent over the last century.
Of the 18 recorded bat species in the UK, 17 of these can be found in Devon.
Samantha gives the following advice on what to do if you find an injured or sick bat:
Pick it up using gloves.
Place it in a secure shoe box with air holes along with a cloth so it can hide and a bottle top worth of water.
Put it in a quiet place and contact one of the numbers below.
