A FORMER Barnstaple youth player has been selected for the England under-16 rugby squad.
Nik Harris, of Westward Ho!, impressed the selectors when he played for the South West team in the RFU's Under-16 Divisional Festival at Broadstreet, Coventry, at the weekend.
Nik, a forward, was encouraged to play rugby at St Michael's School, Tawstock, and joined the youth section at Barnstaple.
He has since secured a sports scholarship at Sherborne School, in Dorset, has played for the Dorset and Wiltshire team and trains with the Bath Academy.
Nik said: "A lot of this is down to Jules Hydleman, Harry Roberts, Kipper Sluman, Mark Clayton and Jeremy Chugg, who encouraged me to give the sport a go.
"To have the opportunity to wear a white jersey is just a dream come true."
The England squad will play against Italy under-17s at Lichfield, Staffordshire, on April 1 and Wales under-16s at Oxford University on April 6.
