JOE FREEMAN became the third member of Barnstaple ABC to reach the quarter-finals of the National Schools Boxing Championships.
The Park Community School pupil won the Western Counties title in style with victory over Daniel Allison at Filton College in Bristol.
After suffering a knee injury playing football earlier in the week, there were doubts over his ability to compete.
But despite his lack of mobility, Freeman cruised through in the class-three category after controlling all three rounds.
In the circumstances, the venue's small ring suited him and Allison found there was nowhere to hide from constant attacks.
Finding his range with accurate jabs, Freeman set up big-scoring rights and maintained a tight guard throughout.
Allison, from Barton Hill ABC in Bristol, required a standing count in the third and many in the crowd were surprised the referee allowed the bout to continue.
Freeman and club-mate Robbie Squires travel to London for the last eight, both facing opponents from Repton, one of the UK's most prestigious amateur clubs.
Mitch Turner is expected to go straight through to the semi-finals after the withdrawal of his London opponent.
