NEW BARNSTAPLE signing Dave Kimberley is excited about being part of the “best lineout in the league”.
Kimberley, 31, has been persuaded to come out of retirement to join Barnstaple ahead of the new National League Three South West season.
One of the attractions was to work with joint head coach Tom Skelding, the former Plymouth Albion lock who is starting his third season with Barum.
“Barnstaple have easily had the best lineout in the league,” said Kimberley, the back-row forward, who left his player-coach role at Exmouth at the end of last season.
“Tom Skelding is an exceptional set-piece forward and the opportunity to learn from him is good because I would like to do some coaching again one day.”
Kimberley is also looking forward to lining up alongside Matt Gohl.
The promising young lock is due to return to the Barnstaple team for tomorrow’s home game against Redingensians (2.30pm).
Gohl missed the pre-season programme as he completed an eight-week suspension imposed for his sending-off for a spear tackle in the opening minutes of the Devon Senior Cup final defeat to Exmouth in May.
“(Matches against Barnstaple) were always very physical,” said Kimberley who was on the opposing team.
“But the cup final this year was a bit of a blowout when Gohly was sent off. He has so much potential, he is an outstanding forward.”
Barnstaple have recent history against them ahead of tomorrow’s season opener.
They have lost the last eight meetings with Redingensians, who finished fifth last season.
Among those defeats was an agonising 24-23 reverse in Barum’s first home game last season when Redingensians fly half Guy Swadling kicked a last-gasp penalty.
Barnstaple backs Will Topps and Rob Elliott are unavailable for tomorrow's game, while there was an injury doubt over scrum half James Bath.
In the pack, Kimberley, James Starkey, Glenn Cooper and Gordon Howells are all in line to make league debuts for the club.
