BARNSTAPLE'S bid to win the Bowls Devon Ladies Interclub Competition for the first time ended at the semi-final stage, writes Tony Atkins.
They were beaten 35-33 by eventual champions Newton Abbot at Marldon.
Liz Purdon, Jas Evans, Marian Redfern and Audrey Long fought back well against Pat Powell's rink to win five of the last six ends but a dropped three at the finish proved costly as they lost 17-16.
Jackie Hemmings-Anthony, June Wallis, Carole Walters and Dee Newlands recovered from 18-11 down to score six shots over the final four ends before losing 18-17.
Barnstaple's Wendy Holm, June Wallis and Audrey Long beat Marian Harris (Axminster) 23-3 and Ivy Vaughan (Victoria Torquay) 22-9 to reach this weekend's Benevolent Triples final.
Their six-match winning run in the competition will be tested by Margaret Arscott, Iris Gill and Nicci Wilkins (North Tawton) who beat Gill Beer, Pam Parkhouse and Toni McNeil (South Molton) after coming from 8-4 down to win 23-8.
United Services duo Janet Rich and Elizabeth Davies have qualified for the Devon Over-55 Pairs final where they will play Sheila Kirby and Gillian Gunn (Morchard Bishop).
In the men's County Trophy, United Services beat Plymouth North Down 78-75 to reach the semi-finals.
Bideford were beaten 3-2 by Madeira in the quarter-finals of the County Top Club.
