Barnstaple will begin a new series of Devon derbies tomorrow, aiming to continue their strong start to the National League Three South West series by winning at Brixham.
Barum will also meet Newton Abbot in the league this term and only one win will see them improve on last season’s derby record.
Barnstaple were beaten six times by Brixham, Exmouth and Newton Abbot.
Kevin Squire, then the director of rugby, described the sixth of those defeats – a 22-17 home defeat to Newton Abbot from a final-play try – as “probably the most depressing defeat of my whole rugby career”.
“We have lost to the Devon sides in all six league fixtures and for me that is a real low point,” said Squire.
Barnstaple lost 28-3 on their last visit to Brixham but there are happier memories of their previous trip, for the 2010 Devon Senior Cup final, when Neil Giddy’s late drop goal clinched a 28-25 win.
Mark Berry, Luke Berry and Winston James are the only Barnstaple players who remain from the cup-winning squad.
Barnstaple go into the game in fifth place with four wins and a draw from the first six games. Brixham are seventh after winning four and losing two.
