Barnstaple Town’s players were in high spirits on the journey home from Shepton Mallet on Tuesday night – but they will not be allowed to rest on their laurels.
They had just seen Ryan Turner’s second-half goal extend their unbeaten start to the Toolstation Western League season to seven games with a 3-2 win.
But as pleased as manager Tom Bulley was, he saw the win in a game he described as his biggest at Barnstaple as just one building block in what he hopes will continue to be a successful season.
“The lads are delighted and we have got to keep building game by game,” said Bulley.
Barnstaple’s win in Somerset on Tuesday saw them draw level with Bradford Town on 19 points at the top of the First Division, only for Bradford to pull three points clear again with a 6-0 win over Roman Glass St George on Wednesday.
Barnstaple’s only defeat this season came in the FA Cup against Brislington. They will be looking to transfer their league form to knockout football in the next two fixtures.
Town make a trip to Cornwall to face Newquay in FA Carlsberg Vase second round qualifying tomorrow (3pm) before hosting Buckland Athletic in the second round of the Devon St Luke’s Cup on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).
Newquay are in eighth place in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Premier Division with five wins and four defeats.
Buckland are riding high in fifth place in the Western League Premier Division.
