The B3233 Yelland Road in Fremington has been closed for two hours today after a Volvo tipper truck brought down live power cables, obstructing the road.

The truck, registered to a company based in Barnstaple, struck the cables at around 11.15am, leaving them lying across the carriageway.

The emergency services, Highways Agency and Western Power were called and police and firefighters held people back from the scene while the cables were made safe.

The cables were made safe at 12.05pm before one lane of the road was re-opened at 1.15pm.

Workers remain at the site and police are talking to the 53-year-old male driver of the truck, who may be reported for a number of offences, said police press officer Philippa Thompson.
