JIMMY Mullen will play for a place in the last 16 at the US Amateur Championship today.

The Royal North Devon golfer takes on Justin Tereshko, of the United States, at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Georgia at 1.05pm our time.

Mullen, 20, from East-the-Water, qualified for the round of 32 yesterday with a 1-up win against Todd White, who was a member of America’s Walker Cup team last year.

Mullen reached the matchplay stage when he finished in a tie for eighth place in the strokeplay section with rounds of 70 and 69.

Sam Horsfield, the 17-year-old English player who is based in Florida, lost 2 and 1 to Isaiah Logue.

Paul Howard, from Lancashire, was 4 and 3 winner against Gavin Green, of Malaysia, and will play South Korea’s Gunn Yang today.
