A road between Holsworthy and Bradworthy was closed yesterday to allow the air ambulance to land after a man suffered a medical episode while driving.

Police said the Devon Air Ambulance was forced to land on the road after the man was reportedly found unconscious in his vehicle.

It is understood the engine of the black Mercedes Estate was still running, although the car had come to a halt, when the man suffered a medical episode on the road near Lufflands Caravan Site, at Solden Cross, at around 11am.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the man, who has a property in the Sutcombe area, had suffered a medical episode. No other vehicles were involved.

The main road between Holsworthy and Bradworthy was closed for around one hour while the man received treatment and the air ambulance landed.

He was flown to North Devon District Hospital for treatment and the road was reopened by 12.30pm.
