A road between Hatherleigh and Okehampton is currently closed after a lorry got stuck, shed its load and spilled over 130 litres of diesel onto the road.

Police said the A386 Narratons Road is closed in both directions following the incident which occurred at around 1.45pm.

Officers said it appears the lorry became stuck while trying to drive uphill and somehow became detached from its trailer, which was full of rubbish.

Over one tonne of rubbish spilled onto the road, as well as around 130 litres of diesel and a small quantity of hydraulic fluids, causing the carriageway to become blocked.

Highways Agency crews are currently at the scene trying to remove the rubbish and fuel.

Fire crews from Okehampton also attended the scene and contained the diesel in a roadside verge before using environmental packs to stem the spillage.

Police said the road will need “scrubbing clean” before it is reopened.

The road is closed in both directions near to Ellmead Cross. It is expected to remain closed until 7pm to enable debris to be removed and the road surface to be cleaned.
