A theatre company has received £8,000 to run dance classes for people with learning difficulties.
Many Directions Theatre Company were awarded the grant by the People’s Health Trust to create a 12-month programme of weekly dance workshops in Barnstaple and Bideford.
The courses will be organised by Wolf and Water Arts Company, a charity which works with disadvantaged and excluded communities.
Many Directions Director, Peter Harris said: “We are delighted to receive support from the Healthy Communities small grants programme.
“It will give us the chance to set up and run two dance groups which are especially tailored to the needs of people with learning disabilities across North Devon.”
“This will not only be healthy and educational, but lots of fun too.”
The money was raised through the Health Lottery which has raised more than half a million pounds so far.
HealthContact Director, Chris Lunn said: “This fantastic project aims to improve the overall health and well-being of people with learning disabilities in North Devon through the delivery of specially-devised dance and movement workshops that explore a range of themes including emotions, rights to independence, choice, inclusion, safety, bullying, friendships, eating properly and keeping fit.”
