TWO 100-metre turbines can be erected on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty after planning permission was granted at appeal.

The Planning Inspectorate this week granted permission for the two turbines at East Youlstone, near Bude.

The turbines will be taller than Big Ben and will be 7km from Embury Beacon.

Torridge District Council refused the application in July last year but the developers behind the project Airvolution Energy Limited appealed the decision.

The planning inspector said in his report: "The National Planning Policy Framework indicates that great weight should be given to 'conserving landscape and scenic beauty in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty', given their highest status of protection in relation to landscape and scenic beauty.

"I have already found that the proposal would not conflict with those objectives to a material degree."

The inspector has made the condition that the turbines are erected within the next three years.

Accom, It IS a power station. It will need to have cables to get the tiny amount of electricity it will produce to the national grid, or the greedy owner won't be able to line his pockets with subsidies and high tariff prices.

Sandman - this beautiful corner of Devon would not be as beautiful if we put a power station up instead of a turbine now would it? We need more energy, and this is the greenest way of generating it, and is much less of a blot on the landscape than other means, such as cables everywhere with pilons every 100 m, or a power station puffing out dirty smoke. Think about it for a minute - it's not ideal but it's the "least worst" option.

"We still need objection letters for the proposed 5 X 125m turbines at Meddon so if you can and feel "enough is enough" write to TDC the details are on our website http://tinyurl.com/96bxqsl please please do it before the whole of this beautifull corner of Devon is sacrificed in the name of GREED."" .
